AND I LOVE OUR COMMUNITY. MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE SCARED RIGHT NOW. THEY FEAR THAT SOMETHING ABOUT THEM MIGHT MAKE SOME CRUEL AUTHORITY TAKE NOTICE OF THEM AND HARM THEM.

THIS IS A VALID FEAR. THE SUPREME COURT DECIDED LAST YEAR THAT SKIN COLOR, APPEARANCE, LANGUAGE, AND EVEN LOW WAGE JOBS ARE GOOD REASONS FOR EYES TO HARASS AND DETAIN ANYONE. AS OF 2023, AROUND 70,000 OF THE RESIDENTS OF ODESSA, TEXAS ARE HISPANIC. OVER 40% SPEAK A SECOND LANGUAGE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT LOW WAGE WORK MEANS EXACTLY, BUT AROUND 14% OF ODESSANS SURVIVE ON POVERTY WAGES. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS YOUR DUTY AS ELECTED OFFICIALS TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE FROM ANY FORCE THAT THREATENS THEM. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE YOUR STANCES AND POSITIONS KNOWN TO THE PEOPLE YOU SERVE, AND YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO ACT IN THIS SITUATION.
